When the product isn’t better... but everyone still buys it.

This week has been full of celebrations in our house — birthday season has officially hit! 🎉
Two of our boys had birthdays with our youngest turning 7 yesterday.
Seven is such a funny age to buy for. Too old for “baby toys,” but not quite ready for all the tween gifts either. And having already been through the teen years of computer games with his older brothers, I’m holding off on introducing anything console-related for as long as I can!
But despite never having played Minecraft, he knew all about it when the movie came out earlier this year — and was desperate to see it. (Confession: I equally enjoyed it!)
So, when I bought Minecraft Lego and a Minecraft cake for his birthday, he was thrilled. Both were more expensive simply because they had the Minecraft logo on them. And between us, the cake was no better — maybe even a little worse — than an ordinary chocolate cake. The Lego wasn’t any more exciting than a regular set either.
So how did my son — who has never even played Minecraft — become desperate to watch the movie and suddenly a fan of everything Minecraft-related?
👉 The answer: Marketing.
That’s the power of branding, positioning, and visibility.
And it’s exactly the same in business.
If a competitor in your sector seems to be “killing it,” it doesn’t necessarily mean their product or service is better than yours. More often than not, the only real difference is clever marketing.
Because here’s the truth:
If people don’t know about you or your business, they can’t buy from you.
The best product doesn’t always win.
The best-marketed one does.
Food for thought as we head into the weekend.
Have a great one!
