When staff let you down...

Last week I was speaking to a fellow business owner who shared a situation that had really knocked her.
One of her staff members had just turned up and announced they weren’t coming back. No notice. No conversation. Just… finished. And to make it worse, they didn’t even tell her directly — they told another member of staff!
She was gutted. She felt she’d gone above and beyond for this person, and it felt like a real slap in the face.
And sadly, this is one of the very things that puts so many women off from hiring staff — and ultimately from growing their businesses.
But here’s the reality: there’s not one successful entrepreneur out there who has built a business entirely on their own. It just can’t be done. At some point, you need a team around you.
Yes, we all get burnt at some stage. But there are ways to protect yourself and your business:
6 Ways to Mitigate Staff Headaches
1️⃣ Tighten up your vetting process.
Ask additional questions before the interview to save yourself wasted time with the wrong people.
2️⃣ Have a clear contract in place.
Spell out what notice is required so you don’t get left in the lurch.
3️⃣ Set clear role expectations.
Don’t assume people will “just use common sense.” Show them exactly how you want things done.
4️⃣ Know your standards — and stick to them.
Get clear on what you’ll accept, and don’t let standards slip. If they do, address it quickly before it festers.
5️⃣ Communicate regularly.
Hold monthly (or at least quarterly) check-ins so little niggles can be aired before they grow into major issues.
6️⃣ Document how you work.
Processes and guidelines give staff confidence and give you consistency.
Hiring and managing staff isn’t always easy — but it’s the only way to scale sustainably.
