What my half-painted outbuilding taught me about business...

Well, overall I think we can say we’ve had a fairly decent summer weather-wise… and of course, true to form, the kids go back to school and the weather just gets better!
At the very start of summer, I began painting our outbuilding. I got the first coat on, but the back section (the bit you don’t see) and the second coat were left unfinished.
And since then? I’ve made every excuse under the sun not to get back to it.
☀️ Too hot — the paint will dry patchy.
☔ If it’s raining — well, that’s the perfect excuse.
🌞 If the sun’s on it — too hot to go up and down the ladder.
Now, I usually outsource these sorts of jobs. (And yes, I could outsource to my sons, but let’s be honest — I’d end up with more paint on the paving than the building!)
But this weekend I ran out of excuses. The forecast was dry and cloudy, we’re not likely to get many more decent days… so I packed the youngest off for a fun-filled day with Dad, and cracked on.
And as I was painting in peace, I started thinking…
We do this in business all the time.
We put off the “maintenance jobs.”
Not the admin — that’s the kind of thing you should happily outsource or automate. I’m talking about the business maintenance that keeps things healthy:
Sending newsletters
Posting social content
Writing regular blogs or emails
Keeping in touch with your audience
They’re not always exciting, but just like the wood on my outbuilding — if you don’t maintain them, things will start to rot.
So here’s my question for you this week:
👉 What “maintenance jobs” are you putting off in your business right now?
No more excuses. 😉
Speak soon,
Cherie
