The spooky secret to planning your marketing

If you’ve ventured into any shops recently, you won’t have missed it — today is Halloween! 👻

Last night, I sat and made 120 bags of sweets (yes, 120!). I fully expect them to be gone within the hour this evening — for some reason, our street goes all out. It honestly looks like something straight out of an American movie — the streets full of kids after dark, all dressed up and loving every second of it.

Now, I’ll admit — I’m not a huge Halloween fan myself (probably because, as a kid, I had to wear a bin bag and a cone hat as a witch every single year 😅). Not quite the glamorous costumes the kids have today!

But one thing’s for sure — Halloween is big business.

Pumpkin picking, house decorations, new costumes, not to mention the mountains of sweets for trick-or-treaters — it’s huge.

And it got me thinking how events like Halloween, Christmas, Easter, summer holidays — even the smaller “National Days” that seem to pop up every week — they’ve all become brilliant vehicles to drive sales.

When businesses plan around them, they see big results.

Here’s an easy action plan to implement these into your business:

1️⃣ Identify 3–5 key dates that make sense for your business.
Think beyond the obvious holidays — what’s relevant to your audience or industry?
(For example, National Pet Day for a pet brand, or Self-Care September for wellness businesses.)

2️⃣ Plan your offer or campaign around each.
You don’t always need a huge promotion — even a themed email, social post, or bundle can work wonders if it’s tied to something timely.

3️⃣ Start early.
Most businesses react too late — you want to be visible while your audience is still thinking about it, not after they’ve already spent their money elsewhere.

The businesses that win are the ones that plan ahead.
