🌲 Reflections from the Lakes: A Business Lesson Hiding in Plain Sight
This week I have been away recharging at our lodge in the Lake District.
It’s a beautiful 5-star park—immaculate grounds, top-notch service, the kind of place where every detail is polished and premium. But what really struck me this time was how full it was. Not just busy... absolutely bustling.
Every lodge was occupied. There wasn’t a single one up for sale. And over in the motorhome section? Row after row of shiny, brand-new motorhomes that weren’t exactly budget buys. We're talking serious money.
And it hit me: despite what the news headlines keep shouting, people do have money—and they’re happily spending it on things that bring them joy, comfort, and quality experiences.
It’s a strong reminder that if your business isn’t attracting customers right now, it’s not because no one is spending. It’s likely because your message isn’t reaching the right people—or your offer isn’t speaking to what they truly value.
Here’s the thing: the park isn’t cheap. But it’s 5-star. The service is excellent. The experience is premium. And people are choosing to pay more for that.
So, I want to gently challenge you today:
Have you got a premium product or service in your business that caters to the customers who are willing to spend more for more?
If not, it might be time to create one.
Whether it’s a VIP version of your service, a high-end package, or an exclusive offering—people will pay for exceptional quality and convenience. But only if you put it in front of them.
If you’re stuck in the weeds of running your business day to day, it’s easy to miss opportunities like this. But that’s where the real growth is—not in working harder, but in positioning smarter.

Let’s just say I probably wouldn’t have made the shortlist.
I wasn’t top of the class. I didn’t stand out in the way that the “high flyers” did. But what I did have—even then—was a good dose of common sense, a natural knack for understanding how businesses make money (not maths, let me be clear—business numbers!), and a mindset that I just wouldn’t give up.
