Fast, slow... and the real key to momentum in business
As the school holidays come to a close and our summer adventures wrap up, I’ve been reflecting on just how much driving I’ve done over the last couple of months.
Whether it’s been trips to our holiday home or long drives to EC HQ in Birmingham, I’ve definitely racked up the miles.
Now, I can’t say I love driving (unlike my older sons!) — but when I’m heading off alone for business, there’s something quite nice about being in the car, listening to music or an audiobook, completely undisturbed… and yes, it’s my choice of music for a change!
But here’s something I’ve noticed on my travels — and it’s baffled me.
I’ll be cruising along, and there’ll be a car ahead going a good few miles per hour slower than me. So I signal, start to overtake… and suddenly they speed up.
Not young boy racers either — just everyday drivers.
Then, after pushing ahead of me, they’ll drift back into the slow lane and within 10 minutes they’re back at their original snail’s pace… and there I am overtaking them again.
Fast one minute, slow the next. Inconsistent.
And it hit me — this is exactly what I see so often in business.
One minute, someone’s everywhere — posting on all platforms every day, shouting from the rooftops. Then suddenly… nothing. They’ve burnt themselves out.
Instead of picking one or two things they can do consistently, they go “all in” at a sprint, and then have to stop completely because they run out of time, money, or enthusiasm.
And the thing is… momentum in business comes from a steady pace.
Not from speeding ahead, stopping, and starting over again.
You don’t have to do everything — but you do have to do something — regularly.
It’s far more effective to show up in a consistent, sustainable way than to yo-yo between extremes.
If you know your pace has been a bit stop-start lately, and you want clarity on exactly what to focus on for the best results, I have just one space left this week for my Profit Power Hour.
It’s £97 for a focused, one-to-one session where we’ll pinpoint what’s working, what’s not, and exactly where your profits are hiding — so you can move forward with confidence and consistency.
If you want the spot, just hit reply and let me know.
